Mikumi National Park

Mikumi WetlandsOne of the Most popular and accessible parks in Tanzania, Mikumi lies just North of the Selous Game Reserve.

It is Tanzania's third largest National Park and the haunt of the African wild dog, a predator rarely seen anywhere else in Africa.  Lions are commonly found here, preying on the huge populations of wildebeest and other ungulates rare in the Northern Parks: Greater Kudu, Roan and Sable Antelope.

Near the popular Hippo pools you will find storks, gigantic Monitor Lizards and the horrifying African Python that can knock down animals as large as an Impala.  Don't be tempted to get out of your vehicle!

In the Southern region of the park, the miombo woodland is full of hot springs and populated by crocodiles.  Look up for the acrobatic antics of the Colobus Monkeys, they rarely come down to the ground.

Environment: 1165 square kilometres of picturesque wooded hills giving way to the Mkata flood plains.  There is also woodland, broken by rivers and glades of trees.  The park is bordered by the Uluguru Mountains on two sides.

Best Time to Visit: June through October and January through March.  Other months are wet, some roads may be impassable and the flood plain becomes a sticky mess of heavy clay.

Don't Miss:  Hippo pools, Yellow Baboons, packs of Wild Dogs, and Lions in trees.  Chamgore - "place of the python."  Picnic lunch at Choga Wale or Mbuyuni - "place of the baobab."
