Located in the Rift Valley, at the base of the Great Escarpment, Lake Manyara National Park is a picturesque little park that is perfect for a day trip. It is on the way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti, so stop by on the way, or on the way back. Be sure to bring a picnic lunch to enjoy on the peaceful shores of the lake. Manyara is one of the best places for birding as it is home to over 350 species of birds. You will also be entertained by elephant, and baboons in the forests and hippos at the lake.
Near the entrance
of the Park is the eclectic village of Mtu wa Mbu - "Mosquito Creek".
Many local tribes have used this area for trading over the last two centuries
and it is one of the only places on the continent where you can hear four
major language groups - Bantu, Nilotic, Cushitic, and Khoisan.
Best Time to Visit: The long dry season from June to September and again in January and February. During the rainy months, some roads are impassable and the mosquitoes are thick.
Don't
Miss: The Hippo pools, large herds of buffalo on the Simba
river and tree climbing lions! The birds on the lake are fantastic,
at times there are enormous flocks of flamingoes on the lake as well as
many other exotic and colorful birds everywhere you look. Be sure
to stop at the Market in Mtu wa Mbu for people watching and interesting
curio shopping.
