Mahale National Park

Getting to MahaleMahale park is a tremendous wilderness area and your journey  will take you to one of the most remote areas in Tanzania. The park is accessible by boat or by chartered plane only and camping facilities are minimal.  Mahale is a wilderness experience for the intrepid traveler.  If you are more inclined to luxury camping, fine dining, 5 star hotels and game drives, check out the Northern Circuit.  If you enjoy remote places and a more challenging safari, then read on.

Like Gombe Stream, Mahale National Park is home to some of the last surviving wild Chimpanzees in the world, over 700 of them.  Six peaks make up the rugged  Mahale Mountains overlooking Lake Tanganyika.  View game on foot with an armed guide, there are no roads.   Climb the peaks, relax on the shores of the lake and hike through forests, savanna and woodland.

You are likely to encounter elephant, lion, porcupine, giraffe and wild dogs.  Keep a sharp lookout for leopard, olive baboons and the shy blue duiker.  And of course, the Chimps!  We recommend you allow yourself at least a week to fully explore and appreciate Mahale.

Environment:
The Mahale Mountains run along a peninsula jutting into the Eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika.  The highest peak, Nkungwe, is 2460 meters high and dominates the landscape.  The western foothills are lowland forests while the Eastern slopes are drier woodland.  High on the six peaks, above 2000 meters you will find montane and bamboo forests.

Best Time to Visit:  June through October

Don't Miss:  The Chimpanzees.  The remote and isolated beauty of this land that is rarely encroached on by humans. A chance to experience a primitive African landscape, unspoiled by roads or habitation.  A true wilderness experience.
