Jane
Goodall's studies of the Gombe Stream Chimpanzees have made this small
National Park a favorite safari destination in Tanzania. Although
it is a bit out of the way, a visit to Gombe will reward you with the primate
experience of a lifetime. Along with the chimps, you are likely to
see baboons, red colobus, blue monkeys and the colorful red-tail monkeys.
Gombe is a park without roads, so walk and experience this unique island
of wilderness with all your senses.
The chimps at Gombe are familiar with humans and it is possible to watch them for hours and discover some of the secrets of their complex social behaviour. It is recommended that you pick up a copy of The Shadow of Man or Through a Window by Jane Goodall to read on the plane. Chimpanzees can get the same illnesses as humans so you are requested to stay out of Gombe if you are sick. Even a common cold can be fatal to Chimps.
Other creatures at Gombe include: over 200 bird species, buffalo, Defassa waterbuck, Bushbuck and Leopard. Nyika Treks can take you there!
Best Time to Visit: Year round
Don't
Miss: The feeding station near the main camp, a guided walk
through the deep forest, an evening excursion to the lake shore for butterflies,
birds, and secretive nocturnal creatures. An overnight camping trip
on the shores of Lake Tanganyika.
